Law Offices of Richard H. Lehman

Richard's Background

Richard received his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign and his law degree from Loyola University Chicago School of Law. Richard began his legal career nearly 30 years ago with a well-known, large Chicago law firm (then known as Clausen Miller Gorman Caffrey & Witous, P.C), later became a partner in a boutique complex commercial litigation firm (Cherry & Flynn, which became Cherry & Lehman when Peter Flynn became a judge), and subsequently founded Tanner & Lehman LLC, followed by his present firm, Law Offices of Richard H. Lehman.

During his career, Richard has represented clients from both the plaintiff’s and defendant’s side. Richard has successfully tried many cases on behalf of both, and also has successfully mediated and arbitrated cases on behalf of both. From the defense side, Richard has not only successfully tried numerous jury and bench trials, but has prevailed in dozens of cases, including several in which his clients were sued for millions of dollars, through motion practice, allowing his clients to avoid the trial process.

From the plaintiff’s side, Richard has recovered several million dollars for clients over the years in suits involving claims ranging from breach of contract, appropriation of trade secrets, corporate shareholder and partnership disputes, legal malpractice, and personal injury. In the last couple of years alone, Richard has recovered more than $11 million for clients in cases for legal malpractice, breach of contract, and breaches of fiduciary duties owed by the majority owners of a small business to the minority owners of that same business.

Throughout his nearly three decade-long career, Richard has concentrated his practice on suits involving claims of legal malpractice. He has also from time to time served as an expert witness in legal malpractice suits. Richard has brought suits for clients against lawyers and their firms for legal malpractice, and has defended lawyers and their firms when they have been sued for legal malpractice. This is an area of law in which he has a considerable amount of experience, and has achieved a considerable amount of success.

Richard currently handles cases involving complex commercial and business disputes, such as cases involving breaches of contract and breaches of duties arising in shareholder, partnership and other fiduciary relationships, cases involving business torts, such as claims of theft of corporate opportunities, tortious interference with contracts and business relationships, and appropriation of trade secrets, professional liability/legal malpractice claims, personal injury suits, including claims for wrongful death, and divorce cases involving high net worth individuals.
